I am interested in advancing our understanding of the design and operation of networked systems with specific emphasis on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and the Internet of Things (IoT) and their applications. Specifically, I am trying to better understand how to design more sustainable systems, how to make networked computing systems more dependable and robust in challenging environments and for applications that require high levels of reliability. I am also interested in how to better operate such systems once they have been deployed in their target environment. Interoperability in the Internet of Things is another topic I am interested in as this is currently a significant obstacle to widespread deployment. Applications of CPS/IoT that interest to me include smart and connected buildings and urban neighbourhoods, assisted living applications, and smart and connected manufacturing systems.

This academic year (2024/25), I will be teaching module CS4628 Internet of Things (BSc CS fourth year) and CS3061 Systems and Software Practices (BA in Digital Humanities and Information Technology fourth year). At Masters level, I will be teaching module CS6327 Internet of Things: Technology and Applications (MSc CS). In these modules, I will cover the theoretical and practical aspects of networked systems for IoT/CPS as well as how to build distributed software systems.

My research is currently funded by Science Foundation Ireland through my involvement in the CONNECT SFI Centre for Future Networks, where I am a Principal Investigator. In CONNECT we are collaborating with academics and industry from across Ireland. I am also the Director of the Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Research Training in Advanced Networks for Sustainable Communities (ADVANCE CRT). The ADVANCE CRT is a research training school for cohorts of PhD students led by UCC with partners in MTU, TCD, TU Dublin, and Maynooth Univ. and in collaboration with industry. We will train 126 new researchers over 8 years.
