Soundscape Ecology regards evaluating natural environments using recorded sounds. It is a strategic area to preservation and management of natural resources as well as to investigate the effect of human intervention. Soundscape Ecology is an area of research that intends to study natural environments via recorded sounds[1][2]. Microphones are installed in places like forests and oceans, and with the results professionals in various areas of activity (ecology, geography, zoology, biology, government agency officers) intend to answer a large number of different questions in terms of preservation, use of land, climate change, human impact in the environment, changes small and large to natural areas, etc..

While potentially a game-changer technology in terms of monitoring ecological changes, currently a lot more research is needed so that techniques are developed and adapted to meet the challenge.

A team of researchers led by Dr. Rosane Minghim is building on previous work to define the next generation of tools to support solutions of various problems in environmental monitoring, highlighting Ocean Monitoring.

This project will extend a Visual Framework perform data analysis and classification of soundscape ecology data, with focus on underwater acoustics data.

In addition to taking the framework to the next level, the student will create visualisations to illustrate and represent the field and the approach of the team to the problem of sound processing and environment monitoring using sound.
