Electricity Price Forecasting Platform for the Irish Market

Abstract

This project will develop a platform to forecast electricity prices in the Irish Single Electricity Market using SEMO and SEMOpx data. The system will compare its predictions with official SEMO forecasts, supporting better energy planning and cost savings for businesses and consumers, while enabling research into new forecasting methods.

This project will develop a platform to forecast electricity prices in the Irish Single Electricity Market (SEM), using data from SEMO and SEMOpx. Accurate price forecasts are becoming increasingly important as Ireland moves toward renewable energy and a more flexible grid. They can help households, businesses, and industries reduce costs, improve energy planning, and make smarter use of electricity.

The platform will automatically collect and process market data, then generate short-term predictions of electricity prices. These predictions will be compared with the official forecasts provided by SEMO, helping to highlight differences, strengths, and weaknesses between forecasting methods.

In the long term, the platform could support decision-making tools that allow companies and consumers to schedule energy use at cheaper times. It will also provide a useful environment for testing new forecasting approaches in real-world conditions.
